Vote NO on NPVIC Bills
Please vote against HF 47, HF 192, SF 18, SF 30, and SF 85, should those bills come to a vote.
This is the proposal to bring the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact to Minnesota. Rather than having the electoral college votes of Minnesota go to whoever wins Minnesota, they would go to the person who wins the popular vote across the entire country.
This proposal should be rejected as the Electoral College helps protect the representation of smaller states from the electoral power of large states and metro areas. Minnesota is currently the 22nd most populous state and is dwarfed by states like California, Texas, and Florida. We're putting ourselves at a disadvantage in presidential elections if we adopt the NPVIC proposal.
Please vote against these bills and preserve the Electoral College.
Reject the National Popular Vote
Please oppose efforts to extend the National Popular Vote agreement to Minnesota.
Already, there are five bills introduced for the 2021 session: HF 47, HF 192, SF 18, SF 30, and SF 85. Please reject all of these.
The Electoral College is an important part of our election system, and I think it helps Minnesota. Otherwise, states like New York, Texas, and California would have even more electoral power than they do now. Also, from a national perspective, it gives a voice to those in rural areas who otherwise would be ignored in elections.
More importantly, the National Popular Vote isn't consistent with our constitution. The Constitution's provisions emphasize the federal nature of our republic, and the National Popular Vote goes against this, in spirit if not law.
For these reasons, please oppose HF 47, HF 192, SF 18, SF 30, and SF 85, and every other effort to bring the National Popular Vote to our state.
Oppose HF 47, HF 192, SF 18, SF 30, and SF 85
Please oppose HF 47, HF 192, SF 18, SF 30, and SF 85.
These bills seek to have Minnesota join the National Popular Vote movement, would would award electoral votes in presidential elections to the overall popular vote winner.
I am concerned about the consequences of these bills and hope you will oppose. The NPV also goes against our nation's character. As noted in Federalist #10, our country is not a democracy, but rather a republic, and for good reason. Also, state governments play a big role in our constitutional structure. The NPV goes against both of these important principles.
If we are to end our status as a federal republic, we should do it through a constitutional amendment, not an unconstitutional interstate agreement.
Protect the Electoral College
Please protect the Electoral College from efforts to end it, whether "de facto" or "de jure."
The main effort right now to end it is the "National Popular Vote." Since the only way to legally remove the Electoral College is to amend the Constitution, some groups are pushing this as a workaround. It would award the Electoral College votes to the winner of the national popular vote, rather than each state popular vote.
I mention the National Popular Vote specifically because there are three bills that seek to implement it: HF 47, HF 192, SF 18, SF 30, and SF 85. I hope you will vote against these along with any other proposal that comes up.
Our country is a republic, not a democracy and certainly not a direct democracy. Not only do the founding fathers emphasize this point in writings such as Federalist No. 10, but Article IV, Section 4, of the U.S. Constitution also requires all states to have "a Republican Form of Government."
Also, the Constitution designs our government to have the states play a big role. This is seen in the 10th Amendment, the Senate, and, of course, the Electoral College.
My point is that the Electoral College strongly reflects our nation's character. We should respect what the founders created rather than try to destroy or nullify it. Thus, please act to protect the Electoral College against attempts to end it, including HF 47, HF 192, SF 18, SF 30, and SF 85.
