Constituent mail on recreational marijuana initiatives
As a voting constituent in your district, I would like to emphatically urge you to oppose the recent efforts to legalize recreational marijuana.
New Mexico is struggling to address so many other issues that adding something as complicated and risky as legal marijuana will only serve to create more negative impacts for residents.
Our restaurants and other businesses are fighting to get by and keep employees on the payroll everyday, our schools are largely closed, and the homeless problem in major metro areas continues to deteriorate. And those issues are just the daily recurring issues New Mexicans face currently! None of those points addresses critical effects of what legalization might do to our state; like increased use by minors and school age children, unsafe workplaces caused by recreational use, dangerous roads shared with impaired drivers and more.
The revenue gained from legalization will be dwarfed by the amount needed to deal with the fallout from marijuana proliferation in our society.
There are so many other areas of concern that I feel your time would be better spent addressing than recreational marijuana. On that note, I'm respectfully asking that you vote against any and all efforts to make marijuana legal in New Mexico.
Thank you for your time and your service to our beautiful state.
