Support the Food Labeling Modernization Act
I write to request your support for the “Food Labeling Modernization Act of 2023” (H.R. 2901/S. 1289) introduced by House Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT).
This measure would update front-of-package food labeling requirements, and provide a clear, accurate and fair representation of the ingredient list on packaged foods – including food allergens.
Approximately 15 million Americans have life threatening food allergies, which can quickly turn to anaphylaxis – a serious allergic reaction that can occur quickly and is potentially life-threatening. Food-allergic reactions are responsible for about 30,000 emergency room visits and 150-200 deaths a year. Without food allergens clearly labeled, consumers are unable to protect themselves from accidental exposure.
Building upon the FASTER Act of 2021, the Food Labeling Modernization Act is an important step in helping consumers make healthier and more informed food purchasing decisions while avoiding products that may otherwise contain hidden allergens.
Thank you for your consideration, and I hope this legislation becomes law to help people with food allergies stay safe.
