Restore Arctic Refuge Protections Through Reconciliation
As a stewardship-minded conservative, I am writing to ask that you use budget reconciliation to reverse the 2017 tax bill provision that stripped away protections for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge's coastal plain-America's cradle of life.
Not only did that 2017 provision allow oil development in the most biologically significant spot on our planet, it's fanciful assumption that oil and gas leasing/production there will result in more than $1 billion in revenue represents the polar opposite of fiscal conservatism.
Republican President Dwight Eisenhower protected the Arctic Refuge for good reason. It is unlike any other place on the planet. A venerable cradle of life that is home to more than 250 species of wildlife, and where birds from every state in the union and every corner of the globe migrate to hatch and raise their young.
Eisenhower sought to balance development with conservation. Even so, 95 percent of Alaska's North Slope was available for oil and gas development before that 2017 tax provision passed. Safeguarding the Arctic Refuge's coastal plain, the remaining 5 percent, is the responsible--and conservative--thing to do.
Please ensure that language restoring Arctic Refuge protections be included in any infrastructure or budget package that is expected to move through the budget reconciliation process.
