Defend Oakland's Eviction Moratorium!
I am writing to urge you to protect Oakland’s Eviction Moratorium - don’t cave to the pressure of real estate lobbyists!
Oakland’s Eviction Moratorium has been the most important tool in stabilizing our communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. As you know, the Council put this moratorium into place to protect both tenants and the general population from the COVID-19 pandemic and prevent mass displacement during the economic recovery. This policy has been a huge success - and tenants still need these protections!
Academic studies have demonstrated the success of eviction moratoriums, finding that COVID-19 moratoriums prevented further COVID cases, and COVID-19 moratoriums expiring around the country were linked to a rise in COVID cases and COVID deaths.
COVID-19 evictions are also a racial justice issue. A KQED article found that from March 19, 2020 to December 31, 2021 Black tenants in the Bay Area were evicted at double the rate of other tenants. In Alameda County, Black and Latino residents have contracted COVID-19 at a higher rate than other racial and ethnic groups.
Additionally, when Contra Costa County lifted its (weaker) moratorium, many landlords rushed to serve their tenants ‘no-fault’ eviction notices and displace entire buildings of tenants from their homes.
We’re proud that our City acted to keep all of us safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and prevent mass evictions and just as proud that tenants are still safe here. Keep up the good work of supporting policies that put people before profit!
At certain times during the pandemic, landlord lobby groups have encouraged individual landlords to contact their legislators as a push to try to end their local moratoriums. Often these pushes are accompanied by media blitzes and letters threatening to sue the jurisdiction if they don’t remove or amend their moratorium. A large push appears to be happening right now all over the state.
Landlords have lost in court when they tried to invalidate California eviction moratoriums. Don’t cave to the pressure of a coordinated campaign by real estate lobbyists to end the moratorium prematurely.
