Support Help for PACE Victims!
I am writing to ask you to support a proposed $65 million restitution fund to help homeowners defrauded by the PACE loan program. Please stand with the thousands of California homeowners who were victimized by this flawed and predatory program.
Although several jurisdictions have ended their PACE programs, PACE victims - many of them elderly, low- and moderate-income - have been left with crushing tax bills and loan payments that they cannot - and could never - afford. Homeowners who were defrauded often can’t get relief because the companies who defrauded them filed for bankruptcy or have disappeared. This leaves victims vulnerable to losing their homes at a time when California is still in a pandemic and a housing and homelessness crisis.
A restitution fund is the right and just thing for the Legislature to do. Although the state enabled residential PACE programs to encourage the adoption of green energy saving improvements, the roll out of PACE lacked sufficient consumer protections and has left a trail of devastation in its wake. For most victims of PACE, the state is their last hope.
I ask that you provide relief to victims of the PACE program so that they can stay in their home by including the $65 million restitution fund in the next budget. PACE victims shouldn’t have to continue to suffer and choose between basic needs like food and education, and saving their homes.
Please right this wrong and help California homeowners who were exploited by the PACE program.
