Oppose H.R. 8210 & S. 4469, the SAD Act, "Stop Anti-abortion Disinformation"!
Please oppose the SAD Act, the "Stop Anti-abortion Disinformation" legislation. The companion bills are H.R. 8210 and S. 4469.
The bills single out Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) for regulation of their speech. That violates the First Amendment freedom of speech protection.
Indeed, the Act only defines disinformation as "false advertising." This allows the bureaucracy, in this case the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), to define whatever CPCs communicate in public or to clients for political advantage. That further stomps on the Bill of Rights.
Secondly, since most of these organizations are religiously based, the Act would also demean religious freedom in the First Amendment.
Furthermore, most CPCs are non-profit organizations. Since non-profits are not under the jurisdiction of the FTC, the bill flagrantly attempts to put CPCs under the agency's control.
This is legislation triply out of bounds.
I strongly oppose both House and Senate versions of the SAD Act. What is truly sad is that this legislation even appears on Congress' docket.
Stop the SAD ACT (H.R. 8210 & S. 4469)
Access to pro-family and pro-life information is in jeopardy if Congress passes either of the companion bills known as the SAD Act.
H.R. 8210 and S. 4469 violates free speech protection for Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) and subjects them to oversight of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) who can accuse and fine CPCs for "disinformation." The impact would be to silence and disband Crisis Pregnancy Centers by bankrupting them.
CPCs have the right to communicate to their clients without fear of reprisal from a bureaucracy that opposes their world view. And women have the right to receive information that helps them make educated and fully-informed decisions.
Please oppose the SAD Act.
