Stand with California families, Support Legislation to Pass A Right to Housing!
The affordable housing and homelessness crises are destroying the fabric of our state. Not only is it limiting choices - about where we can live, what job we can take, and more - but for people at lower income levels it is forcing more dire choices.
In a state as wealthy as ours, no one should have to choose between basic needs, such as food, housing and health. Polls, both locally and nationally, have shown broad support for housing being treated as a right, not a privilege. And yet government funding and policies are falling far short of making access to adequate housing a reality.
It’s time for California to lead the way once again, and take the steps necessary to make the “‘right to housing” a reality for all Californians.
We are asking you to support a constitutional amendment declaring that the fundamental human right to housing exists in this state. In the 2022 legislative session, our vehicle was SCA 9 (Lena (Gonzalez), sponsored by ACCE, Abundant Housing and United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA). A similar bill will be introduced in 2023.
In addition to the Fact Sheet, here is a Call to Action signed by over 60 organizations. You can sign-on in support using this form: Support the Right to Housing in California.
When passed, the measure will go on the ballot, giving California voters the opportunity to enshrine this right in the State’s Constitution.
Here is the constitutional amendment language: “The fundamental human right to housing is hereby declared to exist in this state. This right ensures access to adequate housing for all Californians. It is the shared obligation of state and local jurisdictions to respect, protect, and fulfill this right through progressively implemented measures, consistent with available resources, within an aggressive but reasonable timeframe.”
This alone will not solve the housing crisis. but having the fundamental human right in place creates a moral and constitutional obligation to actually realize the right of adequate housing for all Californians. State and local governments must act, and can use a wide variety of measures - regulation, subsidies, and more - to help ensure this right.
We sincerely hope that you will join us in calling for this Constitutional Amendment as one step towards accepting our responsibility as Californians to make sure that all of our brothers and sisters are able to have a place to call home.
