No Renter Left Behind!
Five months after California ended its eviction moratorium and the state’s rent relief program closed, tens of thousands of families could be made homeless by the program’s failures. Over 100,000 applicants are STILL waiting to have their applications approved and tens of thousands have had their applications wrongfully denied with no due process. The State’s ERAP (Emergency Rental Assistance Program) has been a blessing for those it’s worked for, but for the tens of thousands still waiting for a response or who were wrongfully denied it has been a nightmare.
As the state scrambles to address the homelessness crisis, we urgently need you to do three things to prevent further disaster:
1. Step in, to get HCD to approve all eligible ERAP applicants that are still pending, or wrongfully denied. Now, before more evictions happen!!
2. Establish a short-term rental assistance program for those who are still working to get back on their feet, who would be helped by a few months of assistance.
3. Hold the for-profit disaster capitalist corporation HCD hired to run ERAP accountable. Despite being paid $278M of our taxpayer dollars, Horne LLP has failed to meet every deadline and their mistakes could have calamitous impacts for families and for our state. With our economy in a spiral, the least we can do to keep families in their homes is to hold Horne accountable.
It is not too late to prevent the unnecessary eviction of tens of thousands of these families, making many of them needlessly homeless - but soon it will be.
The time to act is NOW!
Stop the homelessness bomb - fix ERAP now!
