FPL is out of control, please do something.
As a free-market conservative, I’m asking you to protect your constituents from an out-of-control monopoly, Florida Power & Light (FPL). This utility has been sheltered from free-market competition for way too long. As a result, customers like myself are facing one massive rate increase after another with no end in sight!
After a record rate increase of more than $1 billion, which is raising customer bills by roughly 18 percent, FPL has plans to for more increases later this year. This monopoly utility intends to hit its customers with additional hikes for fuel costs, for its storm protection plan, and for its costs related to Hurricane Ian.
In fact, FPL has been allowed to game the system so it can raise my electric bill for practically anything, including higher interests rates, higher taxes on its profits, inflation, and even its own bad investments. In the base rate increase it had approved by the Public Service Commission (PSC) last year, the company has even shifted its lobbying costs onto the shoulders of customers.
And should FPL happen to overcharge me on my electric bill, the company isn’t even required to reimburse me for it!
Because of FPL’s status as a monopoly with a captive customer base, it has become unresponsive to a rapidly changing energy market. The company, in the face of skyrocketing natural gas prices, which have more than doubled in the past year, has not taken steps to diversify significantly with cheaper power sources to generate electricity. Solar, nuclear, and wind are all much cheaper now than natural gas.
Maybe you did not realize just how much FPL would take advantage of its perks to pad profits and shift its cost of doing business onto customers, but now you do, and you need to do something about it. Otherwise, you are responsible for what amounts to a massive subsidy on the backs of me and every other FPL customer in your district.
You need to take firm action to fix this. Please be willing to stand up to FPL and for energy freedom, just like Governor DeSantis did when he vetoed the FPL effort to kill rooftop solar in the state.
I look forward to hearing back from you and seeing what you do to help lower my electric bill.
Sincerely,
FPL has no intention to keep their promise on lowering rates.
