Sacramento Tenants Are Being Harassed & the City is Failing Them
I am sending this email to encourage you and other Sacramento City Council Members to stand with Sacramento families by passing a strong Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance that can remedy the current issue of Landlord retaliation and harassment!
Landlord harassment is not a new issue in Sacramento: with the rising rents, limited affordable rental units, & the lack of oversight by the City of Sacramento harassment and evictions are on the rise. Yet when victims of landlord harassment reach out to City Services for help, they find themselves waiting days before hearing back that City Services are at capacity or that these services are unable to address the ongoing tenant harassment.
That is why I am asking you to pass a strong Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance to ensure meaningful remedies to our Statewide Tenant Rights! A local anti-harassment ordinance will provide real remedies against landlords who engage in bad faith acts, like:
1. Removing a tenant’s possessions without the tenant’s permission;
2. Threatening violence against a tenant;
3. Refusing to acknowledge receipt of a tenant’s lawful rent payment;
4. Refusing to do repairs for purposes of harassment.
An Anti-Harassment Ordinance is an important tool for curving the growth of homelessness, which was recently found to have increased 67% since 2019. Even with the limited protections that tenants do have, more and more landlords are finding loopholes by “encouraging” their tenants to move through the use of unlawful harassment tactics. We cannot allow families to be harassed out of their homes and into the streets.
Please move fast and pass a comprehensive Anti-Harassment Ordinance that holds abusive landlords in Sacramento accountable!
