Oppose Ranked-choice Voting Bills SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, & SB 1456
I urge you to oppose ranked-choice voting (RCV) bills SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, and SB 1456.
RCV is confusing, distracts from policy issues, and forces voters to vote for candidates they otherwise would not support. It can also lead to candidates with little genuine support winning.
Furthermore, with any voting system, the more complicated it is, the greater the risk of manipulation strategies or fraud. It will also encourage computerized voting, when we should instead support hand-counted paper ballots.
Please oppose ranked-choice voting, and please ensure that SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, SB 1456, or any related bill DON'T get enacted or implemented.
Ranked-choice Voting is Dangerous -- Oppose SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, & SB 1456
I implore you to oppose ranked choice voting, including SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, and SB 1456.
Despite its increasing adoption, ranked-choice voting has dangerous consequences to our electoral process. It is confusing, overly complicated, and obfuscates from the important policy issues at play.
In past elections using ranked-choice voting, we have seen candidates with little actual support win -- simply because of the voting system.
Ranked-choice voting is dangerous -- please oppose SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, SB 1456, and any other similar bill.
Stop Ranked Choice Voting (RCV)
I strongly request that you oppose Ranked Choice Voting (RCV), including SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, and SB 1456, which would implement it.
RCV undermines election integrity because it is excessively complex. Any electoral system that is extremely complicated is also easier to manipulate. Similarly, RCV will undermine the use of hand-counted paper ballots -- this is harmful because hand-counted paper ballots is the most secure form of ballot-counting.
Also, when voting, we should vote for the best candidate. Not rank candidates, many of whom we oppose, or who are obscure. Thus, RCV is a step backward.
Oppose RCV -- including SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, and SB 1456 -- and do everything possible to prevent it.
Ranked Choice Voting Is a Bad Idea
Please reject SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, SB 1456, and all other proposals to adopt Ranked Choice Voting. RCV is a bad idea and a step backward from the traditional election system.
RCV is so complex that it will encourage computerized voting. This is harmful to election integrity, as hand-counted paper ballots are the most reliable and secure.
Furthermore, because of how RCV operates, voters will no longer vote for candidates based on policy issues. Rather, they will rank each candidate, even those they oppose, or those they are ambivalent over. Thus, candidates who (or whose views) don't have strong support could win.
The downsides of RCV are much greater than any possible benefits. Please reject SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, and SB 1456, and ensure they don't pass.
Oppose RCV Bills SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, and SB 1456
Please oppose SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, and SB 1456. These bills would implement ranked-choice voting (RCV) in Illinois elections -- these are dangerous proposals.
We should be choosing single candidates based on their policy views, not ranking candidates (in effect, voting even for those we oppose). Ranked-choice voting will make it harder to focus on policy issues, and select the best candidates.
Also, ranked-choice voting is so complex, that it will discourage the use of hand-counted paper ballots. This is harmful to election integrity. And more broadly, RCV's complexity will make it easier to commit fraud.
Thus, please oppose RCV, including SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, SB 1456, and any other bill implementing this dangerous idea.
Oppose Ranked Choice Voting Proposals
Please oppose SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, & SB 1456.
These bills would be a major step toward implementing ranked-choice voting (RCV) in Illinois elections. However, RCV is harmful and a big step backward, for the following reasons:
-- RCV is so complex that it could become an excuse for computerized voting. However, to have real election integrity, we need to use hand-counted paper ballots.
-- In general, the more complicated any voting system is, the greater the risk of manipulation strategies or fraud.
-- RCV is confusing for voters, and forces them to vote (via ranking every candidate) for candidates they oppose.
-- RCV inherently can lead to candidates with little genuine support winning.
The traditional American election system is far superior. Please oppose SB 2363, SB 315, HB 2716, HB 2807, SB 1456, and any other RCV bill.
