Stop LD 900!
Dear elected official,
LD 900 would increase the annual motor vehicle inspection fee to $20 to create a mandatory digital system for motor vehicle inspections. Please do not impose new fee increases on me and other hardworking Mainers during persistent economic inflation. State government has never been more flush with cash -- there is no need to impose higher fees on Maine people during this time.
In addition, this bill would create a mandatory digital inspection system which raises many serious concerns. If a vehicle fails inspections for faulty electronic components, or for "repairs" that aren't actually needed on a vehicle, a digital record would be created and maintained in the system. Maine motorists will be bound to the first opinion of the mechanic where they take their car for an inspection regardless of its validity. This bill creates an avenue for mechanics to soak Mainers of millions more each year in unnecessary repairs. Mainers would no longer be able to bring their car to a different mechanic for a second opinion.
Small mechanics who do not have the time or resources to comply with entering each inspection into a computer may also opt to forego offering inspection services altogether. This bill raises the possibility for many shops leaving the inspection industry, forcing Mainers to drive long distances to seek annual inspection services.
Please vote NO on LD 900 and save Mainers from this fee increase and the millions more we'll pay collectively in unnecessary vehicle repairs as a result of a digitized inspection system.
