Take Action to Protect Our Stores Today
As a retail business owner who takes enormous pride in serving the people of your district, I cannot accept the current trajectory of retail theft and assaults on hardworking, essential retail workers in our and other communities. Our essential employees, who brave inclement weather, pandemics, and other emergencies to keep our neighborhood running by providing important necessities, should never feel unsafe in the business and community that rely so deeply on the services they provide.
Our beloved cashiers, stockpeople, cooks and other employees work tirelessly in the roles we have hired them for; there is no reason why they need to moonlight as security guards against those who wish to do financial and physical harm to our stores.
We deserve better, and we hope you agree. If you do, we respectfully URGE you to take action on by signing on as a co-sponsor and urging your chamber to bring the following to the floor for a VOTE:
-- S5479 / A5260-A (Scarcella-Spanton / De Los Santos) legislation to make assaulting a retail employee or owner a class D felony such as the case with livery drivers, utility workers, and other essential workers.
-- S1644 / A1504 (Hoylman-Sigal / Rosenthal) - Creates the offense of fostering the sale of stolen goods.
-- S4448 / A4121 (Thomas / Dinowitz) - Raises a subsequent offense to grand larceny in the fourth degree.
As you know, our businesses and our employees are dedicated to serving the public, as are you and other essential employees that keep our State moving forward. We look forward to working hand in hand with you to make a better, safer New York possible.
