Will you take action to protect our stores?
As a retail employee who is employed within your district, I live and work in constant fear of not returning to my loved ones and friends after a day in my store.
Every day, employees just like me both see and hear horrific stories about repeated theft from the businesses we work at and love so much, and when we try to do the right thing and protect our stores, we are often hurt and in some extreme cases killed.
Individuals who walk into our jobs feel emboldened in a way we have not seen before, and as workers who were and continue to be deemed essential, we deserve equal protections to other essential employees within our State.
Our stores, many of which have become like an extended family to us, also deserved enhanced protection. That is why I am asking that you sign onto and vote in favor of legislation that will do just that:
-- S5479 / A5260-A (Scarcella-Spanton / De Los Santos) legislation to make assaulting a retail employee or owner a class D felony such as the case with livery drivers, utility workers, and other essential workers.
-- S1644 / A1504 (Hoylman-Sigal / Rosenthal) - Creates the offense of fostering the sale of stolen goods.
-- S4448 / A4121 (Thomas / Dinowitz) - Raises a subsequent offense to grand larceny in the fourth degree.
We know that more must be done in order to protect retail employees and businesses from criminal, repeated acts of theft and violence, and I hope that I can count on you to stand with us.
