SB 567 responds to the present-day reality millions of California renters are facing and prevents families from falling into homelessness by: ● Improving enforcement of the statewide just cause eviction law, and ● Implementing new protections that make it more difficult to fraudulently use substantial renovation or owner move-in for unjust evictions. Homelessness is surging throughout the state and as COVID eviction moratoriums come to an end with nearly 140,000 renters still waiting on rent relief, hundreds of thousands of renters are at risk of becoming homeless. Eviction for profit unloads the cost of homelessness on local economies and the California taxpayer in the millions. SB 567 bears no cost to the state and closes eviction-for-profit loopholes, while helping to prevent displacement and homelessness for existing residents in the process. We cannot build our way out of this problem alone - we must also stop the bleeding!
