Carroll School Libraries
I am writing to express support for the school librarians of Carroll County Public Schools and to support the rights of our students.
The dismissal of the school library supervisor and removal of dozens of titles pending review, as well as policy changes that mean our students will have fewer reading options, set a bad precedent for our school system.
The removal of such a large number of books for reconsideration, while in alignment with current district policies, keeps students from accessing materials that interest them and foster a love of reading, and it is an obstacle to learning. Additionally, new policies that keep library staff from ordering books for older students and adult titles that are developmentally appropriate violate students’ right to access information. These acts and policies don’t protect children; they limit their ability to learn and understand the world.
Library staff have the expertise and training to select appropriate materials that meet the needs and interests of all students in the school system, and they deserve a trained and experienced supervisor who understands the operation.
Please make it a priority to restore the school library supervisor and removed titles, and demonstrate our shared trust in school librarians to make the right decision for our students by revising the policies that keep them from ordering the books our students want and need!
