Help Pittsburg renters pass Rent Control to control skyrocketing rents!
I am emailing you in solidarity with Pittsburg renters who are struggling to stay afloat to urge you to pass a Rent Stabilization Ordinance in the City of Pittsburg before more families are pushed onto our streets!
Our state is currently experiencing a humanitarian crisis with families facing skyrocketing rents, making housing unaffordable and pushing hundreds of thousands into homelessness. A 2020 report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that a $100 increase in median rent is associated with a 9 percent increase in homelessness. With rents legally allowed to go up as much as 10 percent last year, that means that an average 2-bedroom apartment in Pittsburg rented at the median rent of $2,241 could legally go up as much as $224 a year! With Contra Costa seeing a 35% increase in homelessness since 2019 it is evident that renters cannot afford to see their rents increase as much as 10 percent. We are asking you to consider bringing the annual allowable rent increases from 5 percent plus CPI, to an affordable 3 percent increase. This would ensure that families are not so stretched thin just to keep a roof over their heads, while ensuring small landlords are able to make a profit.
Do not wait for the housing and homelessness crisis to worsen in Pittsburg - act now and pass a Rent Stabilization Ordinance to help keep families housed!
