Are you doing anything?
I am deeply concerned about Massage Envy's gross negligence in addressing cases of sexual harassment and assault at their locations.
I recently read that hundreds of women have come forward with accusations of sexual assault that occurred at Massage Envy. In many cases, the perpetrator was simply moved to another location rather than being disciplined.
The multitude of people that have come forward lead me to believe this is a systemic institutional problem. As such, I was not surprised when I heard that Massage Envy forces clients to sign waivers preventing them from raising legal complaints - allowing perpetrators to continue preying on unwitting clients.
Knowing the failures of Massage Envy to protect their clients from sexual harassment and assault, I do not feel comfortable going to one of your locations. Until you improve your policies to protect clients, I will refrain from supporting your business. Please take action to address this systemic problem.
Stop facilitating sexual exploitation
I am writing to express my concern regarding Massage Envy’s apparent facilitation of sexual exploitation. From Hollywood, Capitol Hill, Silicon Valley and beyond, the #MeToo movement has exposed the wide-spread prevalence of sexual harassment and sexual assault in our society.
I was made aware that Massage Envy has been, and is being, sued by hundreds of women for failing to take appropriate measures when a massage therapist sexually harasses or assaults a client.
The multitude of people that have come forward lead me to believe this is a systemic institutional problem. Please improve your policies regarding sexual assault at your locations to protect women.
Until these issues are addressed, I do not wish to go to a Massage Envy location. I hope you will swiftly respond to this issue and make strong corporate improvements to fix this problem.
Massage envy customer concern
I recently saw a news article about sexual assaults associated with your company. In the article you said "We will never stop working to have industry-leading safety policies."
However, how can you say that when you still have a policy that forces customers to wave their rights?
Your own policy says: "At No Time Shall You Have A Right To, Nor Shall You, Assert Or Bring Any Claim, Demand, Or Legal Action Against Mef Or Any Of Its Affiliates ... Neither Mef Nor Any Of Its Affiliates Shall Have Any Liability For (I) ... (Iii) Any Claim Based Upon Any Alleged Unlawful Act Or Omission By The Franchisee Or Any Independently Owned And Operated Massage Envy® Location."
This is egregiously broad and strong - you need to make exceptions for cases of negligence or knowing misconduct. If you really are working to improve, can you please publicly change this policy?
Please fix this policy
Hundreds of customers have experienced sexual assault and/or harassment at the hands of Massage Envy massage therapists. Massage Envy has enabled this behavior through poor policies and has dismissed or downplayed the seriousness of these allegations by shirking responsibility and refusing transparency. Even more shocking is that Massage Envy has actively stood in the way of justice being done in these situations by forcing many of their clients to give up their rights to “assert or bring any claim, demand, or legal action” against them by sneaking a clause into their customer agreement.
This is an extreme instance of victim-blaming and dodging responsibility in cases where your company knew someone had complaints against them etc.
Please fix this policy so that customers can trust you again!
