Vote Yes on the Tenant Protection Act of 2019!!
As a concerned California resident, I'm writing to express my strong support for the Tenant Protection Act of 2019 (Assembly Bill 1482) to stop outrageous rent increases and unfair evictions and to urge you to support this bill!
Last month the statewide homeless count was released. The staggering data showed that tens of thousands of Californians that have been recently been displaced because of destructive rent increases being handed down by landlords seeking windfall profits at the expense of our communities. In addition, EMC Research released results of a recent poll showing overwhelming statewide support for just cause eviction protection and preventing gouging with a rent cap.
Even though AB 1482 did not include just cause provisions when it passed through the Assembly, both AB 1482 and AB 1481 (just cause) made it out of their first committees with overwhelming support and 157 Democratic delegates have expressed support for a rent cap AND just cause protections. We can't allow another legislative session where our elected representatives fail to produce any relief to Californians suffering from the ever increasing cost of rent. This is your opportunity to make California a hero in addressing this crisis by supporting AB 1482 to help Keep Families Home. Your constituents want, and NEED, these bills to pass!
Time and time again research has shown a clear connection between rising rents and an increase in homelessness. Despite millions being spent to alleviate homelessness across CA, double digit increases in the homeless population continue as new families becoming homeless for the first time. Until we protect tenants from rent-gouging and unfair evictions with AB 1482, homelessness will continue to grow.
We must also build more housing our communities can actually afford, but building more housing alone will not suffice. In 2017, a study from Zillow concluded that for every 5% rent increase in Los Angeles, 2000 people will be pushed into homelessness [1].
Stand with the millions of Californians who are at risk of displacement now or, even worse, homelessness. Stand with the millions of Californians for whom additional housing built in the coming years will not help. Stand with the California Democratic Party and Governor Gavin Newsom and support this bill!
I look forward to your support!
Protect families from rent gouging! Support AB 1482!
