Support and Defend my Right to Defend Myself and My Family!
On March 11, 2020, a public health emergency due to Covid-19 was declared pursuant to the Louisiana Health Emergency Powers Act, La. R.S. 29:760, et seq. Since then, numerous parishes and cities across Louisiana have also declared states of emergency pursuant to the Louisiana Homeland Security and Emergency Assistance and Disaster Act, La. R.A. 29:721, et seq.
Under these acts, the governor, parish presidents, and even local mayors are given the unconstitutional “authority” to suspend or limit the sale, dispensing, or transportation of firearms during an emergency, infringing on the ability of law-abiding individuals to protect themselves and their families.
It is during these times of emergency, where police and other services are likely to be stretched thin, that people most rely on their right to keep and bear arms to defend themselves, their homes, and their families.
While I understand there is much that needs to be done during this emergency, the ability of state and local government to deny me my right to protect myself and my family is too important to delay until a later time.
As such, I strongly urge that once the legislative session reconvenes, the legislature and the Governor amend the Louisiana Health Emergency Powers Act, the Louisiana Homeland Security and Emergency Assistance and Disaster Act, and any other similar act, to remove any “authority” of any government official at any level from infringing on my right to protect myself and my family during a time of emergency.
Gun Owners of America will keep me updated on any progress related to these efforts.
Thank you,
Repeal any law that allows for gun control during a time of emergency
