Stop the Upcoming Wave of COVID-19 Evictions!
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of Californians to lose their incomes - pushing thousands of us into a position where we are unable to pay rent, due to no fault of our own. Unless the State steps in, there could be an unprecedented tsunami of evictions across California, pushing thousands more into homelessness, as soon as the courts reopen. As the Governor works to follow through on his executive order to shelter unhoused residents during shelter in place, it is ironic that we as a state would allow for thousands more to become homeless for the first time because they were following the law and staying home from work.
California can and must do better. To keep our families and communities housed, we must pass Assemblymember Chiu's bill AB 1436 the “COVID-19 Eviction Protection and Housing Stability Act," which prohibits landlords from evicting tenants based on any unpaid rent accrued during the state of emergency and through 90 days after.
