Stop Voter Suppression
Almost two years after Sacramento voters submitted over 47,000 signatures to qualify a permanent rent control measure for the ballot, the Sacramento City Council has stifled democracy and moved to block citizens from voting for real rent control!
The active suppression of this ballot initiative is ultimately voter suppression. Whether you’re trying to intimidate voters from voting at all, or you’re denying voters the opportunity to vote on a proposition we the people have put forward - a right which is guaranteed by the California constitution - it is an unconscionable and reprehensible suppression of the will of Sacramentans. Unfortunately, this action is part of a pattern of power-hungry politicians acting in self-interest and in the interest of their wealthy donors, rather than working for the people they represent.
We are calling on you as our City Council and Mayor to STOP VOTER SUPPRESSION and SUPPORT the most vulnerable COMMUNITY MEMBERS: tenants! Accordingly, we are demanding the following:
- Immediately Stop Legal Actions to Block Real Rent Control in Sacramento
- Agendize the Sacramento Rent Control Ballot Initiative and vote to put it on the ballot for this November’s Election
- Enact a local rental/housing assistance program to help tenants who have fallen behind on housing payments due to COVID-19
- Halt all attempts to create a “strong mayor” system here in Sacramento. We don’t need more power in the hands of a single person, we need you to respect the will of the people.
