ACTION REQUESTED: Urge Governor Newsom to Veto Senate Bill 799
Yesterday, the Senate passed Senate Bill 799, introduced by Sen. Anthony Portantino. Now, the bill heads to the Governor’s desk. This bill would allow striking workers to claim unemployment after two weeks of striking, even if the workers or the labor strikes had nothing to do with the employer. The Chamber needs your help to tell Governor Gavin Newsom to veto this concerning bill.
Unemployment insurance (UI) payments are intended to assist employees who, through no fault of their own, are forced to leave their employment. This bill neglects the intent of unemployment insurance and would worsen California’s unprecedented $18 billion UI Fund deficit, which was caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the state-wide shutdown it caused. Moreover, the bill would hit small and medium-sized businesses because every business in California pays UI taxes on a per-employee basis. Since the UI Fund is paid for entirely by employers, SB 799 will effectively add more debt to California employers.
Take Action
The Chamber signed onto this CalChamber coalition letter which outlines additional concerns and potential impacts of the bill.
