Child Nutrition Waivers must be extended!
Majority Leader Schumer,
As a supporter of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and an anti-hunger advocate, I am writing today to call on you to include an extension of the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) child nutrition waiver authority in the COVID-19 relief bill currently being negotiated.
Without these waivers, millions of school meal programs and summer meal providers will not be able to provide meals and will experience extreme challenges to program solvency.
Providers in our communities and across the U.S. are struggling due to supply chain shortages and price spikes, as well as more expensive program costs over the last two years. Families are struggling, too. These waivers matter to our combined efforts to feed kids in our communities and to hire local workers to support these programs in the schools and summer meal programs.
I'm asking you to continue your anti-hunger fight in this critical way so that children, their families, and school and summer meal providers can have certainty and food security. Thank you for your efforts to support the families the Food Bank of the Southern Tier serves every day.
